Sustainability at ÁILU isn’t a feature – it’s the foundation. Living in the Arctic means living close to the land, the light, the water, and the seasons. It shapes how we think, how we build, and how we welcome others.
Our heating comes from deep within the earth – through a geothermal system that warms us efficiently even in the coldest months. Electricity is used consciously and sparingly, and LED lighting and smart thermostats help us reduce our footprint.
We offer fresh drinking water from our own well, free of chemicals and bottled waste. All bathrooms are stocked with refillable, vegan hygiene products – simple choices that reduce plastic and respect the environment.
In our kitchens and breakfast baskets, you’ll find regional ingredients, minimal packaging, and as much care for the planet as for taste. Waste is sorted and composted – and unnecessary single-use items avoided wherever possible.
We encourage our guests to arrive by night train and bus, and we provide shuttle services from the nearest stops. Once here, nature takes the lead: snowshoes instead of snowmobiles, foraging walks instead of tours, silent trails instead of loud entertainment.
We work with local Sámi families to offer respectful insights into a culture deeply rooted in nature. Their knowledge and traditions are not a backdrop, but a living part of this place – and something we wish to honor, not consume.
Every flower you see in your room has grown nearby. Every small decision we make – from materials to lightbulbs – is part of a bigger idea: that hospitality can be quiet, beautiful, and good.
Sustainability is not about perfection. It’s about care, thought, and responsibility. At ÁILU, we walk gently – and invite our guests to do the same.
